Woodvale Wanderers F.C. Club History

Footballer Woodvale Wanderers Football Club was formed in October 1973 by K.R.Hodkinson and M.J.Squire. The team was formed by regulars at the local pub, the Moor Park Hotel, Dulwich in a road named Wood Vale. Training took place at Peckham Rye and friendly matches were played on Sunday afternoons. The club colours were claret and light blue shirts and light blue shorts.

The club tasted their first league football when they were elected to the Southern Area Sunday Football league (div 6) for the 1975/76 season. Mick Squire started the season as Secretary, Treasurer and Manager, quite a feat! Neil Moir was elected captain, a post he would hold for six years. Home matches were played at Falconwood Fields in Eltham. John Smith became manager during the season and it was apparent that he had a difficult job on his hands. On occasions the team could only field eight or nine players. This disastrous season saw the team finish second to bottom with a mere seven points.

The following season saw changes with Albert Willett as the new Treasurer. Training now took place at Monks Hill Sports Centre and home matches were now played at Addington Park. There were new colours of sky blue shirts & black shorts. Quite an improvement for the club as they finished as notable fourth place which was enough to gain promotion.

The 1977/78 season was even better with a strengthened squad of players. Woodvale had to win their last match for runner-up spot and duly did. Their joy was short-lived only to find out a week later that their nearest rivals were awarded the 2 points from their last match defeat against a team fielding too many first team players. Third place still gained them promotion.

This was a successful period for the club gaining promotion for five consecutive years. Notable victories during 1977/78 were 10-1 against St Heliers OB and 14-3 against Services Rendered followed in 1980/81 by a 12-0 home win against Allbridge.

The club sought a change and joined the Croydon Sunday League 5th division for 1982/83. Adrian Bashford was the new team captain with Neil Moir taking up the new Club captain role. This was another good season for the club. Woodvale were one of three teams chasing the runner-up spot and were to finish third yet again.

Two more strips were used in the next few years, predominantly dark blue and yellow. 1983/84 saw another good season with just two defeats. However this again saw the club promoted finishing in third. It was during this season that during some games all 13 players fielded had notched up over 100 appearances.

There were changes again for 1984/85. Woodvale now played at Old Dunstonians in West Wickham which also had training facilities and a clubhouse and bar. Paul Simmonds & Steve Watson became captain and vice captain in 1985. This began a tough period for the club and they were relegated twice to return to the 5th division. Midfielder Neil Moir retired after 10 seasons in 1986 with 221 games under his belt. Midfielder/Full-back Richard Frampton turned from player to manager for 2 seasons from 1987 to 1989 when the club finished 10th and then 5th. A number of injuries restricted him to just 134 games. Richard still has links with the club today as his son Richard junior now plays for them, quite an achievement.  Goalkeeper and stalwart Mick Squire retired from the club after 15 years in 1988 with 198 appearances. Mick had been Founder, Chairman, Manager, Secretary and Treasurer in his years of service and in 1989 became president. Another ex-player (and full-back) John Plummer took the managerial reins in 1989 and the team finished a mid-table 6th from ten. Steve Killick scored a club record 30 goals for the season..

One particular feat occurred on 2nd October 1989 when in a 7-3 home victory, both Neil Booth and Robin Dyson scored to reach the target of 100 club goals. This has now surpassed by Graham Hall and Graeme Ley. Striker Robin Dyson called it a day in 1990 with 183 appearances and 106 goals to his name. Midfielder/Forward Gary Pitt also retired that year after 4 seasons and 66 appearances and 21 goals. Steve Watson having stepped down from the committee in 1991, retired in 1992 after 15 seasons. He had at the time played the most games for the club at 330 games and scored 33 goals.

During 1997/98 both Paul Simmonds and Graeme Ley achieved 500 games for the club. John Osbon became manager for 1997/98, who like his predecessor Bob had no previous playing attachment to the club. This turned out to be the best season ever for the club finishing as runner-up and gaining promotion to the first division.

The 1999-2000 season was one of the toughest ever proving what a difference between divisions one and two. Only 3 victories and 3 draws could the club manage from their 18 games. Yet their 12 points kept them off bottom spot and so they avoided relegation. Last season (2000-01) was a similar story and the club was relied on an even smaller squad. As per the season before, they would finish one place off the bottom.

2001/02

A good pre-season helped to banish the bad memories of the previous season, however inconsistency proved to be the problem once again. Some good initial performances came against sides at the top of the table producing close results and some valuable points being picked up. However, this level of performance could not be produced week in week out, particularly against the teams in and around the lower places and once again the club struggled in the League and finished bottom. However, the dropping out of several clubs before the 2002/03 season meant that the club remained in the 2nd Division.

2002/03

This season will go down as a watershed in Woodvale Wanderer's history. The Cup aside, the results on the pitch followed the pattern that had been set over the past couple of seasons. It was off the pitch that proved to be more
eventful. Despite the influx of a number of young players, the tenure of John Osborn as manager came to an end after a season which saw the club finish bottom of the table yet reach the semi-final of the League's Cup competition!! It also saw the departure from the club of established players like Andrew Hobbes, Damien Aldious, Mark Morris, Ian Sullivan and Robert Horn.

It has also seen Woodvale's departure from their home for 19 seasons, Old Dunstonians Rugby Club.

2003/04

After the much needed changes of the previous season, there is an air of optimism around the club for the coming season. Paul Simmonds was unanimously voted in to take over the role of Manager after over 600 games for the club. He takes on a relatively young looking squad with only 2 of the current players over the age of 30!! The club has a new home ground at Coombe Lodge opposite Lloyd Park and training facilities at the brand new Astro-turf at Trinity School.
