Richard Walsh won his first major competition with Woodvale, in comfortably
beating Steve Watson in the 2000 final. He repeated his margin of victory from his semi-final
to win by 3 and 2 on his home soil of Cherry Lodge.
Richard led all match winning three of
the first four holes using two of his six shots. Steve could not claw this back over
four crucial holes between 6 and 9 where Richard had no shots and then lost the 10th
to go 4 down. They exchanged the 12th and 13th
and then Richard three putted the next from 20 feet when he need two for victory, though he
was now dormy four. Steve prolonged the match with a rare par at the 15th but conceded
victory on the long par-3 16th to Richard who
this time needed two puts from six feet.
