A superb day starting with a slap up breakfast, fine weather
but with quite a strong wind. This kept the scores down and
handicap golf would be a good score. Al Nawrocki continued his
run of good scores with 34 and the best outward nine. Gary Pitt
also scored 34 but was one ahead on the back nine. Two scores of
33 saw Richard Walsh edge ahead of Peter Miles for a possible
third with one match to go. Organiser Steve Watson without any
blobs finished in style with par, par, birdie for 35 and victory.
Steve had won the Stableford for a third time equalling Robin
Dyson's record.
In the scramble the two Peters, messrs Hooper and Miles shot
four birdies in a final 70. They had the advantage or handicap of
alternately playing an extra ball to make up for the last minute
absentee. They were also giving away plenty of shots to all the
other teams. Unfortunately for them, they were just pipped by the
team of Gary Pitt, Shailen Patel and Peter Hopkins with a net 69.4 coming home in nine straight pars. Peter Miles was one of only two players to hit the green on
the fifth but this won him the nearest-the-pin. Paul Walker won
the Longest-drive at the eighth on his first Society 'day'.
The morning stableford was the final piece of the four-piece
jigsaw in the 1997/98 Championship
.
Gary Pitt made up seven on Peter Hooper to share 131. But Richard
Walsh overhauled them both for a total of 134 and became our
third Championship winner.
